This is a community effort that represents skateboarding.
In 2009, The Wall Street Journal described Portland, Oregon as the skateboarding capital of the world for its comprehensive plan to build a network of 19 skateparks throughout the city. Well the city soon ran out of money and the plan was stopped. We also lost the Department of Skateboarding, which I’m sure some of you remember, and the city just tore down Brooklyn St. Skatepark even though they promised to keep it safe.
So 10 months ago, I thought I’d try getting a few photos from a local photographer into a bar to sell and raise some money. The bar owner wasn’t into it and so I took the idea elsewhere. Long story short, the outcome is #GoSkatePDX – an event/fundraiser on Go Skateboarding Day to raise money for Portland skateparks. Just about the entire Portland skate community is behind this and I wanted to put it on your radar. #GoSkatePDX will feature original pieces of art from 25+ local artists, there will be raffles, skating, music, workshops for cutting old boards into cruisers, beer and more. All proceeds are being donated to fund local skateparks.
